Anthology Poetry Award 2022
Closing date: 31/10/2022
Entry fee: €15
Conditions: Poems submitted must be on the theme of ‘Dreams’ and should not exceed 40 lines.
Prize: €500

Hammond House 2022 International Short Story Prize
Closing date: 30/09/2022
Entry fee: £10
Conditions: one short story (1000 – 5000 words). Theme: Changes.
Prize: 1st Prize: £1000. 2nd Prize: £100. 3rd Prize: £50. Worldwide publication for all shortlisted entries.

SCWC + Berry Writers Festival
Closing date: 30/09/2022
Entry fee: $10
Conditions: Writers are encouraged to include the theme or word berry in their work in some way, and should feel free to interpret this theme in a broad and creative way.  Each Flash Fiction submission will should be composed of one short piece of fiction (under  500  words). 
Prize: The competition winner will receive $500 in prizes and the runner up will receive $100 in prizes. Prizes may include a combination of cash and vouchers. 

2022 NEW ENGLAND THUNDERBOLT PRIZE

Minds Shine Bright Writing Competition 2022 (Spring)
Closing date: 30/09/2022
Entry fee: $5
Conditions: short stories, poems, short scripts and flash fiction. Theme: Storm.
Prize: The winner receives $500. Second place – $400. Third place – $300. Fourth place – $200. Five commended entries receive $100 each.

2022 Alice Sinclair Writing Competition
Closing date: 31/08/2022
Entry fee: $15
Conditions: Poetry and prose. Theme: Out of the Shadows.
Prize: $150 + certificate for first. $100 + certificate for second. Certificate for third (most commended). The 15 highest scoring short stories and the 15 highest scoring poems will be published in an anthology.

Jean Stone 2022 Poetry Award
Closing date: 31/08/2022
Entry fee: $15
Conditions: poem or group of poems up to 60 lines
Prize: $500

2023 NWF/ Joanne Burns Microlit Award
Closing date: 28/08/2022
Entry fee: $15 (free for Hunter)
Conditions: Microfiction or prose poems, up to 200 words, which reflect on some form or aspect of play – whether playful ideas, language or behaviour
Prize: cash prizes and publication

Sydney Hammond Memorial Short Story Writing Competition
Closing date: 01/08/2022
Entry fee: $15
Conditions: Theme: Water Under the Bridge.
Prize: First prize $250AU Hawkeye Publishing Gift Voucher + anthology cover based on the winner’s story. Short-Listed and Long-Listed announced. TOP 40 published in an anthology – free copy to all published entrants.

Boroondara Literary Awards

Entry fee: None
Conditions: The Competition is comprised of two categories: Young Writers and Open Short Story.
Prize: Young Writers’ Competition offers $5,000 in prize money across various sections. The Open Short Story Competition awards $1,500 to its first place winner.

RD Walshe Memorial Writing for the Environment Prize 2022
Closing date: 17/06/2022
Entry fee: None
Conditions: A piece of fictional prose that is no more than 800 words in length. Theme: Peace and Sustainability.
Prize: First prize $500. Runner-up $100.

The Australian/Vogel’s Literary Award
Closing date: 31/05/2022
Entry fee: $25
Conditions: a minimum length of 50,000 words and a maximum of 80,000 words. Entrants must be aged under 35 years of age on 31 May 2022.
Prize: prize money of $20,000 plus publication by Allen & Unwin with an advance against royalties.

Seniors Card Short Story Competition 2022
Closing date: 21/05/2022
Entry fee: To be advised.
Conditions: To be advised.
Prize: The Top 100 stories will be published in Seniors Stories Vol. 8 and launched in November 2022 – these stories showing senior years are worth sharing. 

Eastwood Hills FAW 2022 Annual Literary Competition
Closing date: 15/05/2022
Entry fee: $8
Conditions: Ballad to be in perfect rhyme and metre, with max 80 lines and an Australian bush theme.
Prize: First Prize: $100 plus a trophy and certificate.

2022 Elizabeth Jolley Short Story Prize
Closing date: 02/05/2022
Entry fee: $25
Conditions: original short stories of between 2,000 and 5,000 words.
Prize: first place will receive $6,000, second place will receive $4,000, and third place will receive $2,500.

Furphy Story – Open Short Story Competition
Closing date: 30/04/2022
Entry fee: None
Conditions: Theme: Australian Life In All Its Diversity.
Prize: Prize Money: 1st Prize – $15,000, 2nd Prize – $3,000, 3rd Prize – $2,000. LaTrobe University Shepparton Residency, Publication of selected works in an annual publication.

The Best of Times Short Story Competition #33 Autumn 2022
Closing date: 30/04/2022
Entry fee: $10
Conditions: Humorous short stories (any theme) up to 2500 words.
Prize: First prize: 70% of total entry fees received. Second prize: 10% of total entry fees received. Third prize: 5% of total entry fees received. Certificates for highly commended and commended stories.

2022 Newcastle Short Story Award
Closing date: 25/04/2022
Entry fee: $16.5
Conditions: The word limit is 2000 maximum. This includes titles and any sub-headings. There is no minimum.
Prize: 1st Prize $2000. 2nd Prize $1000. 3rd Prize $700. Highly Commended Award $500. Prize packs and cash prizes for other commended.

Flying Islands Manuscript Prize for Emerging Poets
Closing date: 31/03/2022
Entry fee: $10
Conditions: submit a complete manuscript (m/s) as a PDF document of no less than 60 A4 pages, and of no more than 90 pages.
Prize: $1000 cash, publication in the Flying Island Pocket Poets Series (with fifty free copies to the poet) and the possibility of negotiating a short writer’s residency at Arbaro Writers and Artists Residency. Other finalists may also be offered publication in the Flying Island Pocket Poets Series.

Northern Beaches Writers’ Competition
Closing date: 31/03/2022
Entry fee: $15
Conditions: Submit stories up to 2,500 words that are inspired by the theme of ‘tree’, along with at least one copyright-free image that reflects and enhances that story. Stories can be non-fiction, fiction, or fiction inspired by true events. All genres and styles welcome.
Prize: first place ($100 + publication), second place ($50 + optional publication).

Ethel Webb Bundell Literary Awards (WA)
Closing date: 31/03/2022
Entry fee: $10
Conditions: Submit poetry up to 100 lines on an open theme or short stories up to 4,000 words.
Prize: Prizes in each category: First $400; Second: $200; Third: $100. Highly commended & Commended Certificates.

Little Black Dress Spooky Story Competition
Closing date: 24/03/2022
Entry fee: $10
Conditions: Submit a story on the theme of ‘best friend’. The adult category of this competition is open to Western Australian residents only; however, the youth category is open nationwide.
Prize: WA adult first prize: $100, certificate, complimentary copy of Spooky Story anthology. WA adult second prize: $50, certificate, complimentary copy of Spooky Story anthology. WA youth first prize: $100, certificate, complimentary copy of Spooky Story anthology. WA youth second prize: $25, certificate, complimentary copy of Spooky Story anthology. City of Fremantle Hungerford Award
Closing date: 20/03/2022
Entry fee: $30
Conditions: The Award is made for an unpublished novel, collection of short fiction, young adult fiction or a work of narrative non-fiction by a Western Australian author who has not previously published a full-length manuscript in book form.
Prize: The cash prize of $15,000 is payable upon the signing of a contract with Fremantle Press to publish the winning manuscript.

Mascara Literary Review’s
Closing date: 20/03/2022
Entry fee: None
Conditions: We seek writing that addresses and explores the theme of RESILIENCE through fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction.
Prize: Each contributor will be paid $200 and receive a copy of the anthology upon publication.

Griffith Review Emerging Voices Competition 2022
Closing date: 18/03/2022
Entry fee: $25
Conditions: fiction and creative non-fiction from 3,500 words up to 5,000 words.
Prize: The winners will share a prize pool of $25,000 and have their work published in Griffith Review 78 (November 2022).

Peter Carey Short Story Awards 2022
Closing date: 17/03/2022
Entry fee: $15
Conditions: The award is for short stories between 2000 – 3000 words.
Prize: The winning entry receives $2000, while the runner-up wins $1000. First and second prized stories will also be published in the Spring 2022 issue of Meanjin. Both stories will receive Meanjin’s standard contributor fee for their work.

John Gavin Ballad and Flash Fiction Competition 2022

Conditions: The John Gavin Writing Competition has three categories with a shared them of The Life and Times of John Gavin.

Tales from the Pandemic: Short Story Competition

Entry fee: None
Conditions: short pieces of fiction or non-fiction writing up to 3000 words.
Prize: First prize $3,000. Second prize $1,000. Third prize $500. Local prize $1,000. A selection of entries will be professionally published in an anthology by IngramSpark.

Mulga Bill Awards
Closing date: 07/03/2022
Entry fee: None
Conditions: Writers are encouraged to take inspiration from the theme ‘celebration’, and submit a poem (max 25 lines) or short story (max 2000 words).
Prize: Short story: $500 first prize, $150 second prize. Poetry: $200 first prize, $50 second prize.

Blackout Poetry Competition
Closing date: 01/03/2022
Entry fee: $5
Conditions: Transform the text into a blackout poem.
Prize: The winning piece gets $100 cash and publication in Baby Teeth Journal. Second and third place will be posted on Baby Teeth‘s socials.

Heroines Anthology & 2022 Heroines /Joyce Parkes Women’s Writing Prize 2022
Closing date: 28/02/2022
Entry fee: $15
Conditions: Works from women with a particular focus on telling lost women’s history, untold stories, and reimagined myths, fairy tales, folklore or legends, or speculative fiction.
Prize: the 1st prize for Short Fiction is $1000 & 1st prize for Poetry is $1000. All work long-listed for the prize will be published in the Heroines Anthology Volume 4 in 2022.

Minds Shine Bright Writing Competition 2022 (Summer)
Closing date: 28/02/2022
Entry fee: $5
Conditions: There are four categories including short stories, flash fiction, poetry, and script writing. Theme: Confidence.
Prize: a $1000 prize for the overall winner, a $500 prize for the winner of each category and $100 for commendations. Winning and commended entries will be published in the Minds Shine Bright Confidence Anthology e-book and on MindsShineBright.com.

Positive Words Magazine February 2022 Mini-Competition
Closing date: 28/02/2022
Entry fee: $2.2
Conditions: Entries must be posted by the last day of the relevant month and the winning entry will appear in a future issue. The winner will be notified. Mini-Competition for February: Write a short story in 100 words or less, or a poem in ten lines or less using the word CRUSH at least once.
Prize: Six month subscription to Positive Words magazine.

Writing NSW turns 30!

Conditions: Write a 100-word love letter to your writing community.
Prize: The winning love letter will receive a book pack from Hachette! The winner will also feature on our Writing NSW website.

The 2022 Text Prize
Closing date: 21/02/2022

Conditions: The manuscript of a completed work of fiction or non-fiction that is suitable for a young adult or children’s readership, 20000-100000 words.
Prize: a publishing contract with Text and a $10,000 advance against royalties.
